Ramanathapuram city is the headquarters of Ramanathapuram district. Ramanathapuram has the Ancient historical bridge called as Rama’s Bridge that connecting Tamilnadu and Srilanka. The famous tourist place Ramanathaswamy Temple, with long corridors, big pillars and 38 meter Gopuram located in this district. An old Ancient Coastal Village called as Navabashanam located in this district. As per the history, there is a belief that Lord Rama worshipped in this temple.
In 15th century, Ramanathapuram was ruled by Pandiyan Kingdom. In 1063 A.D, it came under the control of Rajendra Chola. After that, Vijayanagar Nayaks captured this district in 1520 A.D. This district was named as Ramanathapuram during the period of Pandyas. During British Period, The name Ramanathapuram was changed as “Ramnad”. After freedom of India, It was renamed as Ramanathapuram.
